How my long life of adventures started
The first time I left the United States I was fifteen years old and on my way to Russia to study aerospace as part of a foreign exchange program. The world was a very different place. The Internet as we now know it did not exist and, for most people, when you were not at home you were unreachable. The Russian Federation was celebrating its one year anniversary of the coup that ended the USSR. I had never traveled by subway and my notions of the rest of the world came mostly from National Geographic magazines.
The second time I left the United States I was eighteen years old and on my way to London for spring break with a few college friends. (Hey Mom! Did you know it’s cheaper to fly to London than to fly home!). The world was still a very different place. Mobile phones were just starting to shrink down to a manageable size. You didn’t need a ticket to go to the gate at the airport for domestic flights. I had moved away from my small home town to Boston and my expanded understanding of the rest of the world came from the cross-cultural mix of the people around me.
The third time I left the United States I was nineteen years old and on my way to Singapore.
The fourth time I left the United States I was twenty years old and on my way to Hong Kong. I have been traveling ever since…
why i started this blog
After more than two decades of travel, I looked at all I had done and thought, ‘What’s next?’. There is so much more of the world to see. So many more amazing adventures to have. But something needed to be different. It’s not enough to experience the world; I wanted to share it. I have always been one to share travel stories, offer travel advice, or ramble on in general about the reasons to visit different countries. But those conversations were random, infrequent, and I never felt like I had shared everything I could have.
This blog gives me the opportunity to share with all of you the reasons why I love to travel and to hopefully impart a little bit of travel advice. I hope you enjoy reading it!
